Day 16

"On my honor, I will try...."

Today, I sewed Daisy Scout petals onto Mariella's Daisy Scout Smock. Each Petal corresponds with a tenet of the Girl Scout Law, and each week, they do an activity that helps them earn a petal. I don't mind sewing them on, except that they are supposed to be "iron on" patches...but they don't stay ironed on...so I had to sew them on...sewing on iron on patches is not the easiest things to do...the adhesive is sticky, the fabric is stiffer, and my fingers are not happy with the amount of times they have been stuck.

  1. Pretty! Even though it's painful.
The flower thing is a really cool concept, I like. :D

  2. Tomorrow, maybe I'll take a picture of Abby's brownie vest, it's what I'm working on now, but won't finish tonight.

  3. At least back in the day(mid 90's to mid 00's) GSUSA did offer the option to get ones without the iron on backing which makes them easier to sew on. However, I don't remember doing "petals" in daisy's. Also I found that sewing them on first then taking an iron to them really helps keep them in place for when your sash/vest gets a little too up close & personal with nature.

  4. Reminds me of the AWANA patches we'd get for our uniforms. They too, are supposed to be iron on, and they actually do stick rather well if you iron them on well (put the patch on, flip it over to the back side, put a wet handkerchief on the back side, and the iron on the wet handkerchief. Hold it there for a bit, moving the iron around a bit, and it stays way better). Many parents would sew the patches on, but a few years ago, my mom had enough of sewing them, even though she's really good at sewing... so she came up with a creative alternative: stapling the patches. It worked for the time they needed to stay on the uniform, and the amount the uniform was worn. And saved my mom time. :P

  5. I tried stapling them...but Abby kept pulling hers off. I was going to try and recycle the brownie vest for Mariella, since Abby is only using it for about 6 months...but I decided that she is working so hard to get all these badges (she's already earned 7...and she only started as a brownie in March) that I'll let her keep the vest, and get Mariella her own when she flies up to Brownies.
